Junior Squad

JDS-state-champs-410x273What is the squad?

The squad is a junior training and match play program for players under 18 to play against other squads and regional zones in Victoria. There are three tournaments held throughout terms 2 & 3 of the school year. There are six training sessions held throughout the year, plus the three tournaments and an additional invitation only tournament if players have performed well in the previous three tournaments. The tournament age groups are from 18/U down to 12/U in both boys and girls divisions. Players compete individually but the squad's finishing position will be determined by the overall performance of the squad and that of every single player combined. The squad can accommodate for 40 players but can only send 32 players to participate in each tournament. The tournaments are held at Bendigo Tennis Centre. The training sessions are held at various MRTA tennis clubs.

Who can play?

Anyone that plays for a registered club in the MRTA junior competition and is aged between 10 & 17. The squad is open to players of any ability level in the above age bracket. We also very strongly encourage players in the squad to also participate in the MRTA JUNIOR CLASSIC tournament that is held during the school holidays between term two and three. All players will be given an entry form in June at training session number 4.

ITF Junior and Nationals

International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Junior Circuit consists of over 300 tournaments in 115 countries for players aged 18/u. All ITF Junior tournaments are graded according to the strength of entry from Grade A (the Grand Slam juniors), then Grade 1 down to Grade 5. All players require an IPIN to enter ITF Junior tournaments.

National Junior Championships are held in age groups 12/u, 14/u, 16/u and 18/u with limited draw sizes. They are Platinum level tournaments run by Tennis Australia and held throughout the year. Entry into a National Junior Championship event is based on AUSTRALIAN RANKINGS, whilst some wildcards are also awarded.

Optus Junior Tour Tournaments

Optus Junior Tour tournaments (OJT's) are separated into five levels of events – white (weakest), bronze, silver, gold and platinum (strongest). Across Australia OJT's are conducted for players (boys and girls) in age groups 16/u, 14/u and 12/u. All OJT's in these age groups carry Australian Ranking points depending on level of tournament sanctioning. Entry is open to all juniors subject to the rules and regulations governing each tournament. For more information about OJT tournaments.
